We’ve made it to South Africa, and what an incredible journey it’s been so far! Before arriving here, our team had the amazing opportunity to attend a retreat called Awakening at Legends Shared in Eswatini. This retreat brought together three squads in a massive lodging space, where we connected with numerous racers and heard their inspiring testimonies from their time on the race.

Awakening was a rare and special experience—especially for those of us on a semester’s trip like ours. It served as a much-needed transition between countries and was a huge blessing. The World Race staff poured so much time, energy, and planning into this retreat, creating a space where we could worship, learn, and reflect on why we said yes to this incredible journey. It was a moment of resetting, rejoicing in the Lord’s goodness, and immersing ourselves in His presence—recharging our spirits so we can pour out love and service in the ministries we’re about to serve.

Now, we’re in the surfing mecca of South Africa: Jeffreys Bay (affectionately known as JBay), located on the beautiful Eastern Cape. We’ve been here for over a week, exploring the local culture, and it has been nothing short of amazing. Just a 30-minute walk from both the beach and downtown, JBay offers a charming mix of surf culture clothing shops, cozy coffee spots, and mouthwatering food. The people here have welcomed us with open arms, especially the incredible family hosting us.

Our team is staying at the Global Leadership Academy (GLA) campus in the missions house, thanks to World Race’s partnership with Global Leadership Ambassadors (GLA). Built by dedicated volunteers, this house has been home to countless teams over the years. The vision for GLA began 20 years ago when a group of passionate individuals dreamed of planting a high school here to raise leaders committed to helping kids discover their God-given potential. Their motto, “Making disciples, shaping leaders,” truly comes to life in the stories of perseverance and faith we’ve encountered.

Hearing how God has shown up throughout the process of building these schools and this community—especially when resources were scarce—has been a powerful reminder that when we step out in obedience, even when the path seems uncertain, He will provide.

Beyond supporting the schools, our team has been privileged to serve at a local orphanage in JBay. The economic divide here is stark, with unemployment around 30%, a challenge seen across South Africa. Many children are neglected or abandoned due to financial hardship. The orphanage also functions as a daycare for babies and preschoolers whose families have no other care options during the day.

Our time at the orphanage has been filled with teaching, playing, and simply sharing moments of joy—trying to ease the burden for the women who have sacrificed so much to care for these children. One of the most inspiring people we’ve met is Nelly, the “mother” of all the kids, who has been serving this community for 23 years after feeling God’s call to JBay. Her story and radiant love exemplify what it means to follow Jesus wholeheartedly, even when it’s not easy.

We’re beyond excited to spend more time with Nelly and learn from her example of surrender and commitment to God’s calling.

Please keep 7th Heaven and GLA in your prayers as we continue our ministry in the coming weeks. Thank you for following along on this life-changing journey!

Stay tuned for more updates from South Africa!
